Just to bring you up todate, there has been a lot of work done recently to get James House ready for its open day, see below. But this has given some of us the chance to sit down and plan the first stages regarding implementing your plan.
Brian will be working with the board, however what springs to mind is that we are all volunteers who each have different amounts of time that we can commit to James House and clearly we have diverse skills. As any board member could just resign at a moments notice we felt that some thought had to be put into how we implement the plan with the board. That said we do intend to follow your plan and map out what the board will look like in the future and how we shall recruit and how it will perform.
On Tuesday 25th November we shall be starting with Christo (MD) Frank (PM) and Michelle (Social Worker) our three key staff members. It is our wish as we introduce career paths through the organisation that Michelle will learn Frank's role and Frank will learn Christo's role, with a view that should Frank or Christo leave Michelle or Frank can move up through the organisation.
On Tuesday we hope to discover what competencies each of their roles need, then identify what would be poor, average, good and very good performance in relation to each competency. We shall then try to grade each of them in relation to their identified competencies, so at the end we shall know what they need to have to do in each og their respective roles and currently how good they feel they are in those areas.
At this point Christo will drop out of the procedure as some urgent work needs to be done on our funding situation. Frank, Michelle and myself Dave, will then workshop the same process with the whole of the staff over the christmas period as that is traditionally our quiet time as most of the programs are suspended. Our aim is to have identified all the staff competencies and graded each staff member against them by the end of December.
Then during January we shall look at KPI's, Frank has already done a lot of work here and we shall agree an appraisal system. Our aim is by the end of January we shall how KPI's and the appraisal system agreed, so that in February we can start with the system and then in April hold our first real staff appraisals, where we look at performance in relation to KPI's and the development in relation to their grades in the identified competencies.
Now we know two months is not realistic to achieve uses meaningful appraisals but it will mean that all the staff will have gone through the complete system from inception to appraisal in a matter of months. They will see how it works and know what to expect so that in April 2009 we can start our first full year of the system with everyone on board and understanding the system.
Your comments on this procedure would be most interesting at this stage as we have not actually started yet.

There were about 120 people who attended, most of the donors or sponsors as well as representatives of our stakeholders, government bodies etc. One of the children in James House Sithembele was given a video camarea to film the event, and the result is what you can see above. Editing took place late into the evening of the 2nd only pausing to watch the Boks teach England how to play rugby.
